The Impossible Juggling Act: Motherhood And Work

The Impossible Juggling Act: Motherhood And Work

Interview with Princeton professor Anne-Marie Slaughter, who was the director of policy planning at the State Department.

"[We assume] that the worker who works longest is most committed as opposed to valuing time management and efficiency at getting things done over the length of time. And second, [we assume] that that time has to be spent at the office." - Anne-Marie Slaughter

"It’s time to stop fooling ourselves, says a woman who left a position of power: the women who have managed to be both mothers and top professionals are superhuman, rich, or self-employed. If we truly believe in equal opportunity for all women, here’s what has to change."

CFW Campus Commissions for Women

The Commission for Women is throughout the campuses of The Pennsylvania State University. Featured in today's liaison meeting were best practices from Great Valley, Altoona, Brandywine, Lehigh Valley, Hazelton, Schuylkill, Hershey, Berks, and Harrisburg campuses. The slides of the best practices are available on slideshare.

Attendees discussed ways to have the campus commissions help students. Much discussion focused around ways to leverage student activities funding with external funding sources to help raise awareness of women's issues and advocate for support of women, such as a lactation room on the Harrisburg campus, a women in business luncheon at Schuylkill, and lunch and learns.

External partners have included local women in business groups, Women's Resource Center, and Stormbreak. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a national event where men walk a mile in women's shoes in an effort to raise awareness for sexual assault. The Pottsville event, near the Schuylkill campus, raised approximately $40,000.

Christy Long

As a part of our ongoing mission to improve the Commission for Women, appointed members were surveyed in order to determine some of the motivating factors for members' involvement, as well as the factors contributing to persistence in the CFW. Here are Christy Long’s responses.

What motivated you to join the CFW?
I was motivated to join the CFW by my drive to contribute to PSU beyond my unit, to learn more about PSU, and to make PSU a better place.

What do you enjoy most about the CFW?
What I enjoy most about the CFW is making a difference at PSU. I also enjoy meeting great people I otherwise would never have met.

Which of the CFW’s goals are you most passionate about and would like to take a more active role in?
All of them! :)

Christy Long is the Chair of the Commission for Women and the Director of Service Operations for ITS Digital Library Technologies.
